Iodine Home-Therapy

Iodine is found in every cell of the body & plays an extremely important role in nearly every organ system. The thyroid stores the most iodine, along with reproductive organs and breast tissue. Toxic halogens compete with iodine, and if we are deficient, these toxins will bind themselves to receptor sites on the thyroid and greatly disrupt it's function. Our thyroid plays a critical role in hormone production. A deficiency in our thyroid can cause a cascade of chronic issues. Those that are currently on thyroid medication are at even a greater need of iodine. Refer to post "How Iodine Promotes Optimal Well Being" for more information on iodine's profound effects on the body.

Although I am positive every person reading this post is significantly deficient in iodine. You can do a 24 hour Iodine loading test (hakalalabs.com) . The test has you take a 50 mg pill, collect your urine for 24 hours, & return the specimen to the lab. The lab will tell you how much of the pill you excreted. A sufficient person should excrete at least 90% of the 50 mg pill.

Iodine therapy is when you supplement with "mega" doses of iodine to essentially bathe your body in this much-needed mineral. Begin with small doses around 3 mg, and work your way up to mega-doses equating to around 50 mg daily for an extended period of time (2-3 months), before decreasing to a daily 6-12 mg a day for maintenance. It is important to also be acquiring the following when using iodine supplementation: magnesium, selenium, unrefined salt, vitamin c, & a B complex.

Magnesium is best in the "magnesium bi-carbonate" form or transdermally- refer to my post on Magnesium Supplementation.

Recommended Iodine products

Nascent liquid Iodine - drops that are placed in water; allows for beginning on much smaller doses. Also gentle enough for children.

Iodoral - pill form, lowest dosage available is 6.25 mg. Recommended by Iodine guru Dr. Brownstein

Dr. David Brownstein and his mentor have treated thousands of patients with iodine therapy. They have encountered very few people who have acquired iodine-induced hypo or hyperthyroidism. There is one contraindications for using iodine- if you have a known "autonomously functioning nodule" commonly called a "hot nodule" on a thyroid scan, iodine can cause hyperthyroidism. Do not use iodine in this case.

Some people claim they experienced detox symptoms when taking mega doses of iodine.

It is recommended that you find a local natural health practitioner to help guide you through this process. They can provide the necessary labs before, during, and after.
